BLOG: Amateurs are giving professional trainers a bad name

Talkshow values

We operate in an increasingly busy field of media training.  But our services stand out for a number of reasons.  Probably the most important are two of our values.  They are:

  • ·         Industrial relevance

  • ·         Educational rigor

These terms may sound a little grand, so let’s explain.

Industrial relevance

To be really good at teaching media production, we believe it helps to have made multimedia content.  So all of our trainers bring real, live production experience.  We’re lucky because most of our specialists have worked at the BBC which is in itself is an instant badge of honor.

Our trainers don’t learn from textbooks but from doing production.  This is “doing” factors makes our training stand out.  But as television stations and newspapers go into unfortunate decline, laying off many skilled production staff, more and more people are hanging out their shingle and calling themselves media trainers.

What once again makes us stand out from the crowd is that our experience has not just been in traditional radio and television, like many of the others.  It has been in multimedia production on projects that have earned respect around the world.

A lot of trainers still teach web video as if it is TV video and podcasting as if it is radio broadcasting.  They don’t get it and are teaching the old skills in a new paradigm.  We don’t and that makes a difference.

Our curriculum is based on current best practice.  We don’t “wing it” and we’re not justa  few pages ahead in the textbook.  Our trainers have been involved in new media since the pioneering days of the late 90s and early this century.

Educational rigor

It’s all very well to be a practitioner, but that doesn’t mean you can teach.  A lot of practitioners take early retirement to become media trainers.  Because they used to be good at show and tell in High School, they think they’re a natural.

While some practitioners are naturals and do a good job, many aren’t.  And hiring a trainer with no educational background is like hiring a book keep to plan your tax strategy.  (Of course, most self-respecting book keepers will refer you to an accountant.)

The science of learning is incredibly developed and there are huge amounts of research into areas such as how people learn and how to construct information so it is easily learned, retained and put into practice.

There is also a lot of research into how to speed up learning and give it a greater impact in the workplace.  Without access to this expertise, you don’t get value for money.

Therefore, all our trainers have a recognized background or qualification in adult learning.  It means that when we talk about solutions to help your staff, we don’t talk about theatre shows and what our courses, cover, we talk with confidence about what your staff will be able to do after the course with their new skills.
